[BMW 320d, 2014, ~92,000 miles.] The customer came to us with a rattling noise from the front of the engine on cold start-up that settled after a few seconds — a classic warning sign on this engine.
The Problem
[The customer reported a metallic rattle for the first few seconds after starting, worse in the morning. On the N47 diesel engine this often points to timing chain wear — and because the chain sits at the back of the engine on this unit, catching it early matters. We ran diagnostics and inspected the chain, guides and tensioner.]
The Repair
[We replaced the timing chain, tensioner and guide rails, along with the associated sprockets where needed. The engine was reassembled to the correct timing marks and torque settings, and road-tested to confirm the noise was gone.]
The Outcome
